BOMB INSIDE BACKPACK

THE MANITOWOC COUNTY SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT IS INVESTIGATING A BOMB INSIDE A BACKPACK THAT WAS FOUND IN A DITCH. YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, THE MANITOWOC METRO DRUG UNIT SPOKE WITH A RESIDENT THAT FOUND THE BACKPACK OFF STH 147, WHO THOUGHT IT CONTAINED DRUG PARAPHERNALIA. WHEN PERSONNEL EXAMINED THE BACKPACK, THEY FOUND AN ITEM INDICATIVE OF A BOMB AND ADDITIONAL VOLATILE, EXPLOSIVE MATERIAL. THE OUTAGAMIE AND BROWN COUNTY BOMB SQUAD ARRIVED AND PROCESSED THE ITEM, AND AFTER X-RAYS WERE TAKEN, OFFICIALS WERE ABLE TO DEEM THE ITEMS INSIDE SAFE. OFFICIALS SAY INVESTIGATORS HAVE BEEN ABLE TO COLLECT EVIDENCE FROM THE ITEMS THAT MAY IDENTIFY WHOEVER IS RESPONSIBLE.
