GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - "What we want to do is bring attention by requesting and asking residents of Brown County to wear blue tomorrow."

Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach is encouraging residents to wear blue on Friday to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month, shining a light on how the community is aiming to help combat this issue.

Wisconsin DOT highlights new resources to track delays/closures for travelers

"In our community, we have children who fall victim to abuse and neglect in our community," said Streckenbach. "And it's really common for us to try to do everything we can to rid that out of our community."

Blue pinwheels were planted in Green Bay earlier this month, one way the community is raising awareness about child abuse.

Brown County Health and Human Services plays a role in monitoring these cases and making sure that children have a safe place to live if that occurs.

In 2025, they saw more than 1,000 screened cases, a number they want to see lower.

"We need foster parents so that if children do experience abuse or neglect and are unsafe, we need good homes to put them into," said Brown County Health and Human Services Director Erik Pritzl.

CASA of Brown County is another resource that helps improve the lives of children who have suffered from child abuse.

"Prevention starts with connection. It looks like one consistent, caring adult showing up and reminding a child that they matter," said CASA Executive Director Michelle Pierquet-Hohner. "And the most important thing to remember is that this is something that all of us in our community can be a part of."

Brown County Court Judge Samantha Wagner has seen how these cases have played out from both sides of the bench, saying this is something that the community needs to be aware of and take action.

Bodycam shows dramatic rescue during Wisconsin apartment fire

"Children in our community deserve to feel safe in any surroundings of their own, whether that's their home, their school or any other public setting," said Wagner. "Child Abuse Prevention Month is not only about promoting that safety and stability that children deserve to feel, but it's also highlighting the need to support those victims and to stop the cycle of violence."

Streckenbach has made a proclamation in Brown County that April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, aiming to try and get rid of this violence in the community.

BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) - As the golf world turns its attention to the Masters Tournament, the season in Northeast Wisconsin is only just beginning.

At Ledgeview Golf Course, greens are starting to open, but inconsistent spring weather has led to a slow and soggy start. Periods of rain, cold temperatures and wind have forced course operators to constantly adjust plans.

Wisconsin DOT highlights new resources to track delays/closures for travelers

“In the last two weeks, it’s been a lot of start and stop, start and stop,” Ledgeview Golf Course owner Steve Payant said. “The toughest thing to do in the spring is communicate with everyone that yes, we are open, but we are walking only. Or yes, we have carts today but might not tomorrow.”

With several courses in the Green Bay area still closed, local high school and college teams are improvising. Athletes are traveling wherever they can find playable conditions to begin their seasons.

“You have schools from Gillett and Oconto, and Bay Port and Preble trying to get tee times because a lot of their courses are not open yet,” Payant said.

Players say the conditions have made early-season practice a challenge.

“It’s been pretty wet, cold and windy,” Green Bay East senior Tyler Arvey said. “We’ve gone out here as much as we can, but we’ve had to go a lot of places because a lot of courses in Wisconsin are not open right now.”

Despite the slow start, the excitement surrounding the Masters underway this week in Augusta is helping draw golfers out.

“Even if it’s a cold, cruddy night, people stop out and support us and watch the Masters,” Payant said. “It’s unbelievable to see how green it is there, and you look out here and it’s still brown. But pretty soon we will be there.”

Water main break at West De Pere High School prompts early dismissal

Conditions in Green Bay may not be up to par compared to those at Augusta National.

But for Wisconsin golfers eager to shake off winter, any opportunity to hit the links is enough to get back into the swing of things.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Simon Tassy and Ryan Botterill scored 27 seconds apart in the first period and Wisconsin defeated North Dakota 2-1 on Thursday to put the Badgers in the Frozen Four title game for the first time since 2010.

The Badgers (24-12-2), seeded third in their region, will play the winner between Michigan and Denver in the championship game Saturday. Wisconsin has won six titles, its most recent coming 20 years ago.

Wisconsin defeated North Dakota (29-10-1) for the first time in the NCAA Tournament after going 0-3 against the Fighting Hawks. Wisconsin, which beat a No. 1 seed for the second time in a row, had gone 1-11-2 in its previous 14 meetings with the Hawks.

North Dakota, which came less than a minute from being shut out for the first time in more than a year, has gone a decade since winning its eighth national championship.

Daniel Hauser stopped 21 shots for the Badgers, including tough glove save through traffic while sitting down on a 6-on-5 with 2:05 left.

Front-line center Ellis Rickwood scored North Dakota's lone goal on a 6-on-5, and Jan Spunar made 35 saves.

The Badgers' defense limited a North Dakota offense that entered the game third nationally in scoring (3.8 goals per game). But Wisconsin’s forecheck dictated the early points and set the tone.

Wisconsin dominated the first period, taking 18 shots on goal to four. The Badgers scored twice 27 seconds apart when Tassy and Botterill hit the back of the net from the right circle.

Even when the Hawks had chances, they usually failed to take advantage, going 0 for 5 on the power play, including a 5-on-3 in the second period that lasted 1:56. Ollie Josephson also missed a chance in that period to score on a breakaway.

FOX VALLEY, Wis. (WFRV) - Turtles might seem like a low-maintenance pet, but owners at local exotic pet stores argue that the reality is the opposite.

Evers signs bill sending millions to UW athletic programs, addresses NIL rights

Brady Bartel has owned Wild Habitats in Appleton for four years. Often, people come into his store after buying a turtle at a larger commercial pet store, shocked by how much maintenance is required.

“You gotta clean it, feed it and it's not just something you can get rid of for the next 30 or 40 years,” Bartel said.

Turtles require large habitats, and due to the reptile's life expectancy, it becomes a decades-long commitment. Bartel said that commitment is something people are not always prepared for, and then brought to smaller pet stores.

“You see a lot of them come back and need to be rehomed,” Bartel said. “I’ve had turnes come back 4 times over.”

When buyers underestimate the care required, the turtle is often surrendered, leaving rescues like J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue to step in.

J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue focuses on finding suitable homes for surrendered pets. John Moyles, director, said turtles are the most surrendered pet they see yearly.

“In a typical year, we see 180 turtles and tortoises come through our doors,” Moyles said.

In Wisconsin, the DNR is introducing a new rule making it illegal to collect wild turtles or frogs to make as pets. While this does not apply to store-bought reptiles, Bartel said it reflects a growing concern about reptile care and protection.

“When they find out it's a lot more work than they expected, most of those people get rid of the turtle in the first year,” Bartel said. “It's a high turnaround rate, and it's not fair to the animal.”

Governor Evers signs bill to allow Tribe-controlled online sports gambling

While it's unclear if larger retailers are phasing out turtles, Moyles said the conversation about proper care is growing.

“If you get these animals from a retailer or an expo, you have to have a plan for these animals,” Moyles said. “[For] the retailers, I want to call on them to make sure who is buying that they have a plan for the animal.”

The Latest from Storm Team 5...

A weak system passing by tonight will increase our cloud coverage around sunset and bring a chance for a few light rain showers after 9-10pm. A few snowflakes are possible up north as well. Rain amounts will be minimal, on the order of a few hundreths to at most a tenth. Rain will exit shortly after midnight. Lows tonight will fall into the low and mid 30s.

Plan on some clouds for the morning, but the sunshine will emerge for the afternoon. Highs will be right around our seasonal normal in the upper 40s and low to mid 50s.

The opposite will happen on Saturday. We will start sunny and end with clouds. Highs will be a touch warmer into the mid 50s for the afternoon. The first of many rain chances arrives Saturday evening and night.

Periods of rain showers and even some rumbles of thunder is expected for Sunday. Highs will be much warmer topping out around 70 degrees.

For the most part, Monday looks dry, but we are keeping an eye out for showers and storms arriving Monday evening. These could be strong so something to monitor throughout the weekend.

More showers and storms are possible Tuesday and Wednesday. An additonal 1-2.5" of rain is in the forecast from Saturday evening through Wednesday night.

(WFRV) – Tony Evers has signed legislation allocating millions of dollars to support athletic facility maintenance, debt service and name, image and likeness-related provisions at several University of Wisconsin campuses.

Under the bill, UW-Madison will receive $14.6 million in general purpose revenue annually. UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay will each receive $200,000 annually in general purpose revenue. The three universities are Wisconsin’s only public NCAA Division I schools.

Governor Evers signs bill to allow Tribe-controlled online sports gambling

The legislation also addresses name, image and likeness (NIL) rights for student-athletes. It prohibits the UW Board of Regents or individual system institutions from restricting athletes’ ability to use their NIL outside official team activities or from obtaining professional representation.

State Representative Jerry O’Connor not seeking re-election

However, the bill also bars the use of state general purpose revenue to directly create or support NIL compensation agreements.

Supporters say the funding will help maintain competitive athletic facilities while ensuring student-athletes retain expanded rights in the evolving NIL landscape.

First lady Melania Trump made a statement at the White House on Thursday to slam reports about any connections she may have had with Jeffrey Epstein and his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.

She also called on Congress to allow testimony from Epstein victims and to enter them into the official record. She denied being a victim herself and said an email exchange with Maxwell amounted to a "trivial note."

She also called Epstein "disgraceful" and called for "lies" about her association with him to end "today."

“The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today. The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility and respect,” Trump said from the White House's Grand Foyer. “I do not object to their ignorance, but rather I reject their mean-spirited attempts to defame my reputation.”

The first lady referenced a “casual” email she sent to Maxwell, saying it “cannot be categorized as anything more than casual correspondence.”

An email that was part of the millions of Epstein documents released by Congress showed Trump emailing Maxwell in October 2002 complimenting her on an article written about Epstein in New York Magazine.

She signed off the email with “Love, Melania.”

The first lady said she was never friends with Epstein, only that she and President Trump ran in the same circles as him in New York and Palm Beach.

She also pushed back on the notion that Epstein introduced her to her husband.

“I am not Epstein’s victim. Epstein did not introduce me to Donald Trump,” the first lady said, adding that she met her husband at a party in New York.

She called on Congress to provide the victims of Epstein with a public hearing “specifically centered around the survivors.”

“Each and every woman should have her day to tell her story in public, if she wishes, and then her testimony should be permanently entered into the Congressional Record,” she said. “Then, and only then, will we have the truth.”

She said she was never involved in any sex trafficking, and that she never flew on Epstein's plane or visited his private island.

The first lady said she and her attorneys have fought against “these unfounded and baseless lies with success” and will continue to do so.

The statement came at time when conversations surrounding Epstein and the president’s ties to him have mostly died down.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing related to Epstein’s allegations and has said repeatedly that the two had a falling out years ago. He grew frustrated with the constant conversation surrounding Epstein and in November flipped from resisting the release of the files to signing the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November.

Democratic lawmakers were quick to agree with Mrs. Trump’s call for a public hearing.

Rep. Ro Khanna, (D-Ca.), and the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee that has been investigating Epstein, tagged House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) in his X post.

“What say you @Speaker Johnson?” he wrote.

The committee has heard from notable names that have had ties to Epstein in one way or another, including both former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Businessman Bill Gates is expected to appear in June to testify.

(WFRV) - Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced on Thursday afternoon that he would enact Wisconsin Assembly Bill 601.

‘The Wisco Way’: Brewers unveil 2026 City Connect uniforms with an ode to Wisconsin

The bill, which was introduced and sponsored as a bipartisan effort, legalizes mobile sports gambling in Wisconsin; however, it must be run through Tribal casinos/servers on Tribal land. It must be processed through a Tribal casino system.

The bill, Gov. Evers says, means likely increased revenue for Tribal Nations in Wisconsin; however, Gov. Evers expressed concerns about the 'important work that lies ahead,' including potential revenue inequality.

"Each of the 11 Tribes must now work diligently-and together-to shape the future of sports betting in Wisconsin," Gov. Evers said. "What I will not accept is a plan that fractures this opportunity into unequal pieces, allowing some Tribes to reap great benefits while leaving only crumbs for others."

"An approach that exacerbates long-standing inequalities among Tribal Nations is not good for Wisconsinites or Wisconsin," Gov. Evers said. "I will not entertain it as governor."

The bill reads as follows:

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

Section 1. 945.01 (1) (h) of the statutes is created to read: 4945.01 (1) (h) An event or sports wager made by a person physically located in 5this state using a mobile or other electronic device if the server or other device used to conduct such event or sports wager is physically located on a federally recognized American Indian tribe’s Indian lands and if the event or sports wager is conducted pursuant to an Indian gaming compact under s. 14.035 originally entered into prior to April 1, 1993.

2025 Assembly Bill 601

DOJ investigating NFL broadcasting deals: Report

The bill is one of many that Gov. Evers took action with on Thursday, as it now becomes 2025 Wisconsin Act 247.

Local 5 will provide more updates as needed.
