A preliminary investigation revealed that a 15-year-old Watertown boy, operating an SUV with a 69-year-old passenger, had stopped at a stop sign while traveling north. As the SUV proceeded through the intersection, it was struck by a semi-truck driven by a 24-year-old woman from Chicago.
A third vehicle, a van driven by a 35-year-old Juneau man traveling east on Highway 33, also made contact with the SUV after the initial collision. Authorities confirmed that the 15-year-old was operating legally on an instructional permit at the time of the crash.
Following the collision, a fire broke out involving the semi’s fuel tank, resulting in a significant fuel spill that covered roughly a tenth of a mile along Highway 33. The cleanup took considerable time and led to an extended closure of the intersection and surrounding roadways.
The SUV occupants were trapped and required extrication but suffered only minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.
