GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Fourth of July brings family, friends, and communities together to celebrate the nation’s birthday, but local law enforcement is reminding residents to stay safe while enjoying the holiday.
“Usually, better weather, people are enjoying their time off, they are enjoying celebrating, which typically leads to a higher call volume,” said Acting Captain of the Patrol Division Mike Sobieck.

With the warmer weather, more boats are expected on the water, especially near City Deck. Authorities say increased patrols will be in place to ensure boaters are wearing life jackets and practicing safe boating.
“We will have our boat patrol out. The fire department has boats out, but their focus is different from our police department,” said Sobieck.
In addition to water safety, fire officials are urging caution with fireworks. Reported fires have increased during recent July 4 weekends, and Lt. Shauna Walsh is encouraging families to consider safer alternatives.
“From working the Fourth, you know, it was call after call. Most of the time it was smaller fires, and unfortunately, there is usually one or two big fires each year,” Walsh said. “I think a really good goal for the area would be to have no fires at all.”
Officials are asking residents to leave the fireworks to the professionals and instead attend one of the many local shows happening across the area.

“There are other events in the community. Leave it to the professionals and check out the Fire Over the Fox,” Walsh added.
For those unable to attend an event in person, Local 5 will air fireworks specials from four different cities on Friday, July 4, at 8 p.m.
