GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – During Thursday’s edition of Community Update, we were joined in studio by Jennifer Gonzalez of the Green Bay Police Department and Captain Nick Craig of the Green Bay Metro Fire Department.
The Fourth of July is upon us, which of course means celebrations will be in full swing, and with the busyness of the Holiday, there is also an increased need for blood donations.
The first topic discussed was, of course, fireworks, and more specifically, what is legal and which ones are illegal.
Community Update: Green Bay Police Chief talks summertime safety
“The easiest way to explain it is if it leaves the ground or explodes, it’s going to be illegal,” began Gonzalez, Communications Coordinator for GBPD. “The important thing to know is if you are in possession or caught lighting one of those types off, it can result in a fine of up to $1,000 per each firework.”
Captain Craig then touched on firework permits and the 15-day notice period. “Unfortunately, the average person isn’t going to be able to meet the qualifications to get a permit; they need to be a professional pyrotechnic company to get it.”
Both then touched on the safety aspect of the Fourth of July and fireworks.

“Every year in the U.S., there are over 35,00 fires caused by fireworks with over 10,000 injuries, with the majority coming from legal fireworks,” began Capt. Craig. “We would recommend that if you want to have a safe Fourth of July to leave it to the professionals.”
On Thursday, GBPD and GBMFD are teaming up for the ‘Battle of the Badges’ blood drive with the Community Blood Center. The two agencies are competing to see who can bring in the most donors.
“Eligible donors can choose whether they want their donation to count for the Green Bay Police Department or Green Bay Metro Fire Department,” added Capt. Craig. “Successful donations will receive a $15 eGift Card and can choose from an agency mug.
