APPLETON, Wis. (WFRV) – The City of Appleton celebrated the Fourth of July a day early.
City officials held their annual celebration in Memorial Park, and this year the festivities mirrored previous celebrations after a scaled-down version of the event last year.

“Last year, if we would have had more time, we would have done this also,” said City of Appleton Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Management director Dean Gazza. “This year, we knew what we wanted to do: bring back everything everybody was accustomed to.”
When longtime host the Appleton Area Jaycees announced they would no longer be able to put on the event, it sent city officials scrambling to pull off a scaled down Fourth of July celebration last year. It included just a fireworks show and no live entertainment which has been a hallmark of previous celebrations.

This year, though, that all changed. There were food trucks, inflatables, and music to keep people busy while they waited in the park for the fireworks show to begin.
Officials tell Local 5 there were about 5000 people in the park for the fireworks show and thousands of others watching from other spots nearby.
