In a new Facebook post from Hartford Fire & Rescue, due to the size of the spill, the response was quickly upgraded to a “Box Level Response,” calling in additional support, including the Washing County Hazmat Team. A large amount of diesel fuel was leaking from the locomotives, prompting an urgent environmental containment effort.

Crews acted swiftly, using hazmat absorbent booms and digging trenches to prevent the fuel from spreading. The fuel was then pumped into containers for removal. Officials say the environmental impact was kept within the immediate area thanks to quick action by all involved.
Firefighters rotated in and out of the scene throughout the morning due to rising temperatures and the need for protective gear.
