NEW HOPE, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in Wisconsin have released additional details related to the double homicide and officer-involved shooting that occurred Sunday in the Town of New Hope.
According to the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office, the victims have been identified as 52-year-old Paula L. Shulfer and 53-year-old Dale S. Shulfer. A preliminary investigation determined both died from apparent gunshot wounds.

The suspect, 35-year-old John L. Shulfer, is the son of Paula and Dale. All three individuals lived at the residence where the incident took place.
Officials say John was armed and failed to comply with verbal commands before being shot by a deputy. He was treated at the scene and transported via MedEvac to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
John Shulfer has been booked on charges of first-degree intentional homicide. The Portage County District Attorney’s Office will review the case once the investigation is complete.

Two children who were present in the home at the time of the incident were unharmed and have been released to a family member.
