(WFRV) – With over 20 deadly UTV/ATV crashes in Wisconsin so far in 2025, officials with the Wisconsin DNR are urging residents to buckle up and ride safely.
With summer in full swing, Wisconsin residents and visitors are taking to trails and backroads on UTVs in high numbers, and the Wisconsin DNR is reminding riders that safety is paramount.

According to the DNR, there have been 23 fatal UTV/ATV crashes in Wisconsin in 2025; of those 23, only five were reportedly wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. It was also noted that UTVs made up 86% of those fatalities.
“UTVs are designed with key safety features, like roll cages and seatbelts, that are there to protect riders in the event of a crash or rollover,” said Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, Wisconsin DNR off-highway vehicle administrator. “But those features can only help if they’re used.”
Officials noted the importance of wearing a seatbelt but also reminded riders that wearing a seatbelt is required by state law.

“While these numbers are concerning, they also highlight a clear opportunity for prevention,” said Holsclaw. “Wearing a seatbelt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe while riding.”
Anyone driving a UTV or ATV is also required by state law to be at least 16 years old.
