REID, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials in Wisconsin announced that a lake that was temporarily closed on Tuesday has reopened for swimming and boating after it was deemed a low-risk for E. coli.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office reported on July 29, at 12:37 p.m., that access to Mission Lake was temporarily closed as routine water testing the day before detected extremely high levels of E. coli bacteria.

Additional testing continued as the week progressed, with follow-up testing confirming that the E. coli levels have returned to what officials call a ‘low-risk’ range.
According to an updated release, the following departments worked to investigate the elevated levels:
- Marathon County Conservation, Planning & Zoning Department
- Marathon County Health Department
- Wausau & Marathon County Parks, Recreation & Forestry
However, the specific source of the rise in E. coli bacteria levels was not identified. Several potential sources have been ruled out following evaluation.

Weekly testing is conducted throughout the season, as the beach monitoring program continues.
