(WFRV) — Week 1 of Packers Training Camp is in the books, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a player turning more heads than rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden.
The Packers’ 23rd overall pick is already showing why GM Brian Gutekunst spent a first-rounder on a wideout. Golden’s speed, sharp route running, and reliable hands have stood out — especially during one of camp’s biggest offensive plays.

On Tuesday, Jordan Love launched a deep ball to Golden, who had two defenders beat en route to a 60-yard touchdown.
Earlier in the day, during one-on-ones, Golden adjusted to an underthrown pass, leapt for a contested two-handed grab, made a move, and finished in the end zone. Plays like those are exactly why the Packers had him so high on their draft board.
“I think he’s done a really nice job with his opportunities,” Gutekunst told reporters Tuesday. “It’s very, very early, but he’s done a very nice job.”
“I really respect his work ethic so far,” said offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich. “I think it’s going to help him play fast when his opportunity is called.”
While coaches have been impressed, Golden is also feeling the love from Packers fans during his first camp in Green Bay.
“I’m loving it. The fans have so much energy. It makes me want to go out there and practice,” Golden said. “To have people out there supporting us — it means a lot.”
Golden acknowledged the challenge of learning Matt LaFleur’s motion-heavy offense, but said he’s doing everything he can to stay ready.
“It’s starting to pick up for me. The more I’m on the field, the faster I learn,” he said. “I just want to play fast so I don’t have to think. The more reps I get, the more comfortable I feel.”
With Family Night coming up Saturday, August 2, Golden says he isn’t feeling any pressure — just motivation. He has his rookie season goals set, even if he’s keeping them under wraps.

“I have them written down on my mirror,” Golden laughed. “I’ll let you know about them after the season.”
The Packers open their preseason schedule on August 9 at Lambeau Field against the New York Jets. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
