OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities with the City of Oshkosh say flashing traffic signs are now installed as a reminder that drivers should stop and yield to firetrucks backing into a firehouse.
According to a joint release from the Oshkosh Police Department and the Oshkosh Fire Department, the new signs have been installed on Ceape Avenue near Station No. 15 due to how close the entrance of the fire truck bays are to the road.

Officials say it is crucial for drivers to remain clear of the area while a firetruck is backing into the firehouse, as firefighters usually exit the truck to help ensure that it is safely backed into the station.
Vehicles are not to attempt to pass near the front or back of the firetruck until it has completely exited the road. The driver of the truck and the assisting firefighters are said to be focused on the blind spots of the truck and not on drivers who mistakenly think they have a safe gap to pass.
Following the signs and stopping for the fire truck is essential in maintaining the safety of our firefighters- ensuring they remain ready to respond to the next emergency situation in the city.

Officials say several cameras are placed around the fire station, and drivers who do not stop for the firetrucks while they drive backwards into the station may receive a fine. Officers from the police department are also expected to have an extra presence in the area.
