BARRON, Wis. (WFRV) – A police department in Wisconsin is in mourning as one of its officers unexpectedly died while off-duty.
According to the Barron Police Department, Officer Ben Smith had served the Barron community since January 2024 after working for other statewide law enforcement groups.

Before those duties, he was a salesman and instructor with multiple firearm distributors. The sudden loss of Officer Smith prompted the department to request aid from other surrounding agencies.
The Barron County Sheriff’s Department and other municipal agencies will potentially be in the community to help and ensure continued services as the Barron Police Department mourns the loss of Officer Smith.
“As the staff at the Barron Police Department processes the grief of losing Officer Smith, we ask for the patience and understanding from the community, and to respect the privacy of Officer Smith’s family,” the Barron Police Department said on Facebook.
