PORTAGE, Wis. (WFRV) – A police chief in Wisconsin says the department has separated from an officer who was arrested on charges of child abuse and domestic disorderly conduct.
In a press conference from the Portage Police Department on Friday, Chief Keith Klafke provided details on the investigation surrounding now former Portage Police Officer Cameron Coronado.
According to Chief Klafke, an on-duty sergeant reported to him that Coronado was allegedly involved in an incident at home while off-duty, requiring immediate police action. Chief Klafke said that the call came in around 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 16.
An outside agency was reportedly contacted as the investigators for the case, and Coronado was immediately placed on paid administrative leave, as is standard law and procedure.
Coronado was arrested for alleged physical abuse of a child and a domestic-related disorderly conduct. Wisconsin Circuit Court records show that the alleged incidents occurred on separate dates, with the former on August 16 and the latter on July 9.
Chief Klafke stated during the press conference that Coronado is no longer with the Portage Police Department after an agreement on Thursday; however, the criminal investigation is being done through an outside agency.
During the press conference, Chief Klafke also addressed comments from the public concerning potential misconceptions over the situation.

“Rest assured, no one is viewing this as a vacation,” Chief Klafke said. “There are a lot of misconceptions on procedures, especially those involving a tenured employee who has certain rights that are governed by federal law, labor law and police unions.”
Coronado’s cash bond was set at $10,000 during his initial appearance in court on August 20, two days after the arrest warrant was officially filed.
