ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) – An 18-year-old Nekoosa man has officially been charged with first-degree intentional homicide for allegedly shooting a man in the head at the scene of a crash on August 15.
In a criminal complaint against Ji-Gwe-Mko Layton, Brown County Sheriff’s Office deputies reported that a sergeant was dispatched to a crash on I-41 southbound and State Highway 172 eastbound on August 15.

The complaint states that a man had fled from the vehicle while carrying a rifle, running into a wooded area. Dispatch reported initially that the man was around 25-35 years old.
Sergeant Pizzala found the man, later identified as Layton, who subsequently dropped the rifle into the gravel. The criminal complaint alleges that Layton was covered in blood and subsequently ordered to the ground and handcuffed.
Layton reportedly told Sergeant Pizzala that the victim was ‘acting like he was going to rob my safe while I was at work,’ before confirming that he fatally shot the victim in the head.

A preliminary report listed the victim’s cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
Layton is set for a court hearing at 2 p.m. on August 26.
