MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – The University of Wisconsin-Madison has become the latest in a line of colleges across the nation that have been victims of a shooting hoax.
According to a release from Marc Lovicott, the Executive Director of Communications for the UW-Madison Police Department, the Dane County 911 Center received a call on Monday morning before 11:30 that a person with a rifle fired two shots near Memorial Library.
No other calls had been received by the campus police or Dane County, as UWPD officers responded immediately. Dispatchers reviewed security cameras in and around the area, which revealed normal activity.
Officials quickly confirmed at the scene that there was no threat, and an alert was not sent out. If the emergency had been verified, Lovicott says the campus community would’ve immediately been notified through the WiscAlert system.
Officials are investigating the incident to determine who may have sent the false report, which is similar to recent shooting hoaxes at numerous other colleges nationwide, including at Iowa State University, Villanova University and the University of South Carolina.
