OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Officials with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation say the Main Street Bridge in Oshkosh will be closed starting Tuesday, with the closure expected to last until April.
According to a release from WisDOT, the bridge is closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, with vehicles being asked to use 9th Avenue, Oregon Street, and Jackson Street as a detour, while pedestrians are asked to use sidewalks along 6th Avenue, Oregon Street, Jackson Street, Division Street, Pearl Avenue, and Main Street as a detour.

From now through October 14, marine traffic can continue as normal with lift spans operating as usual for all boats that require an opening.
Starting on October 15, the lift spans will remain closed and masted vessels will not be allowed under the bridge. Any smaller, unmasted boats that do not require a bridge opening will still be allowed to pass under the bridge.
Officials say Local, business, and emergency access will be maintained throughout the extent of the closure of the bridge.
The closure comes as part of a rehabilitation-level project with the following improvements expected to be made to the Main Street Bridge:
- Rehabilitate existing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and structural components of the bascule span
- Minor repairs to the operator’s house, hydraulic power units, and access platforms
- Concrete deck repairs and overlay of the fixed approach spans
- Removal and replacement of the steel grid deck on the movable span.

WisDOT officials report that these improvements to the bridge will decrease the maintenance costs associated with it while also improving the bridge’s operation of the movable span and extending the life of the bridge by replacing deteriorated and worn-out components.
