MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Nearly 12 years after the initial report, a man in Wisconsin has been arrested for alleged sexual assault after a DNA sample found a hit in a national FBI database.
According to the Madison Police Department, a call came in shortly after 2 a.m. on November 3, 2013, that a woman had been sexually assaulted.
Officers responded to the 200 block of South Hancock Street and met with the victim, taking her to the hospital to receive treatment. Investigation revealed that the victim was at a concert with friends and became separated from them.
An unknown man who reportedly offered to assist her ended up attacking and sexually assaulting her in a parking lot. Officials identified DNA evidence from the alleged attacker, and it had circulated in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) since December 2013 with no hits.
According to the release, the Madison Police Department received a hit for the DNA collected in the case, and drafted a probable cause for 2nd Degree Sexual Assault for Nathaniel Stabler.
Stabler was subsequently arrested and is in custody at the Dane County Jail. and has officially been charged in court.
His cash bond was set for $300,000 in a court hearing on September 8.
