WAUSAU, Wis. (WFRV) – A 40-year-old Wisconsin man with five prior drug convictions was sentenced to eight years in prison for multiple charges stemming from drug trafficking as well as illegal possession of a firearm.
According to Chadwick M. Elgersma, Acting United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, Johntay Johnson was sentenced about three months after he pleaded guilty.
Johnson was identified as a cocaine trafficker through an investigation in December 2023 by the Central Wisconsin Narcotics Task Force. Between January and July 2024, a confidential informant purchased two ounces of cocaine from him seven times, six at his Wausau home.
On September 10, 2024, officials executed a search warrant at his home and found three guns, cocaine and marijuana in his bedroom, with a fourth gun in another bedroom. Officers also found over $13,000, digital scales and other drug-related items.
Two of the seized guns had previously been reported stolen, and at the time of the search warrant, Johnson was arrested on an unrelated warrant. While out on a cash bond, Johnson sold an ounce of cocaine to a confidential informant two additional times.
During the sentencing, U.S. District Judge William Conley cited that Johnson’s cocaine trafficking was further aggravated by his illegal possession of firearms and his immediate return to drug dealing after being released on bond, along with his five prior convictions for drug trafficking.
Johnson will spend three years on supervised release at the conclusion of his eight-year prison term.
