SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WFRV) – Officers in Wisconsin commended faculty and staff at a middle school for their quick actions, which helped prevent further danger after a student expressing ‘concerning behavior’ brought a steak knife to school.
According to the Sun Prairie Police Department, officers responded to Prairie View Middle School shortly before 9 a.m. on Wednesday for a report that a student had a knife.
Staff members were alerted by a safety monitoring system that a student had been displaying ‘concerning behavior,’ and upon contacting the student, found that they had a steak knife in their possession.
After faculty and staff quickly separated the student from others, the school was placed on hold under standard protocol, keeping students and staff in the classrooms while administrators respond.
Police arrived and helped to verbally cool the situation down, as the student reportedly dropped the knife, which officers recovered. Sun Prairie Police Officers took the student into custody, with nobody injured during the incident.
Officers are reportedly speaking with staff and preparing to forward possible criminal charges. In a statement from Chief Kevin Warych, he commended the staff at the school for their quick actions.
“I want to commend the teachers and staff at Prairie View Middle School for their quick actions,” Chief Warych said via the release. “I have no doubt their actions prevented other students from being in danger.”
