A new warning from President Donald Trump pushed the Iran crisis into sharper focus on Sunday. In a message tied to the Strait of Hormuz standoff, Trump said Iran had 48 hours to reopen the key shipping route or face US strikes on its energy infrastructure.
Iran answered with a threat of its own. Officials in Tehran said critical infrastructure across the Middle East, including water systems, could be targeted if the United States carries out the attack Trump described.
The exchange came as the region was already under heavy strain. The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important oil transit points, so any prolonged disruption could raise wider economic and security concerns. The warning also followed reports of a major Iranian missile attack on Israel, adding to fears that the conflict could expand further.
At the same time, the administration signaled a broader security response at home and abroad, including more US personnel moving toward the region and new airport staffing measures inside the United States.
