University of Wisconsin-Green Bay honors inhabitants ahead of construction of new library

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s (UWGB) newest library is set to begin construction soon, and members of the First Nations community gathered with school officials to celebrate specially.

The Cofrin Technology and Education Center (CTEC) is a roughly $100 million project set to open in 2027 as the new library on campus, replacing the Cofrin Library.

According to the UWGB blog about the project, a 2020 study recommended a full replacement of the Cofrin Library, rather than a renovation, deeming it more cost-effective.

At 10 a.m. on Thursday, an Earth Honoring brought the community together to pay homage to our planet and the plants and animals inhabiting the CTEC’s construction space.

“The building was specifically designed to allow for flexibility to adapt to an ever-changing world,” Chancellor Michael Alexander said via a release. “It reflects our desire to encourage discussion, interdisciplinary work, community conversations and creativity with less offices and more collaborative workspaces.”

The Menominee Nation and the Ho-Chunk Nation originally lived in the UWGB area. Menominee Elder Napos and Ho-Chunk Elder Ritchie Brown provided words of recognition for the Earth at the Earth Honoring.
