GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – The newest mural in Green Bay has been painted, showcasing a widely discussed phenomenon in the area.
The coal piles have been a hot topic for a long time in the city amongst officials and residents, specifically regarding whether or when they’ll move and where they would go if so.

Local mural painter Beau Thomas took his time painting a mural of a moment in Green Bay lore—a man named Steve Thoe skiing down the coal piles.
Thomas said he reimagined the old photo, especially with how big a topic the coal piles are, and he had been working on it especially recently, as officials talk about a deal to move them.
“I worked on it for the last week,” Thomas said. “I’ve always loved the image, and I’ve wanted a poster of the Ski Green Bay posters from this. I knew about the deadline, so it’s going to be a big moment.”

Thomas is a Green Bay native, and he said he loves to reflect the best parts of the city through the murals he paints. The location in specific was a property he’d been working at for years, and he spoke with the owner of Frank Herman’s, who agreed.
Thomas has numerous murals around the city, with 10 in this specific location in general.
