WINNECONNE, Wis. (WFRV) – The Winneconne Police Department posted on its Facebook page about a scam that caused a citizen to lose $1,500.
The citizen recently went to the police department to report a scam. The scammers allegedly called her and posed to be from her credit card company.
The post says the scammers convinced her to buy Target gift cards totaling $1,500. Police said Target was not able to give her the money back because it was already accessed.

The Winneconne Police Department provided the following tips in regards to scams:
- Do not open any suspicious texts. Delete them.
- If you get a call like this, never give your info to them. Hang up or don’t answer unknown phone numbers. Call your financial institution. They will enact security measures to protect your account(s).
- Never open suspicious or unknown emails. Delete them.
- No financial institution will ask you to purchase gift cards.
- Monitor your accounts and report any suspicious activity to your financial institution(s).
Victims of similar scams are advised to contact their local police department.
