ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) – The National Guard gave a special thank you to teachers in the Green Bay area on Wednesday, offering them a unique experience: a ride in a Blackhawk helicopter.
“It was amazing. Flying over Lambeau was crazy,” said Emily Vanschyndel, a teacher at Green Bay West. “I was talking to one of the other people on the flight, and I couldn’t imagine what it would be like to fly over when there is a full crowd.”

The National Guard says connecting with local educators is crucial, as it helps them share with students the many opportunities available after high school. Having teachers experience those opportunities firsthand enhances that mission.
“A lot of them definitely will have a lot more they can take back to their schools now,” said Vanschyndel. “Whether it be trade opportunities or things like being an EMT, there is just a whole bunch of job options for them.”
Sgt. John Vanschyndel, a recruiter with the National Guard, emphasized the value of building relationships with educators.
“Having a connection with people that closely impact our future—the students and the kids that are going to be the next generation to take forward this country—and be able to impact their lives,” he said.
He added that even within the military, a flight in a Blackhawk is a rare treat.

“It’s a great way to give back to the teachers who understand our mission in the National Guard for recruiting,” he said.
This marked the fourth and final trip the National Guard organized with the Blackhawk, ensuring that more than 80 teachers were able to take to the skies.
