MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities have launched a death investigation after a body was discovered in Lake Mendota early Sunday morning near the UW-Madison campus.
According to the UW-Madison Police Department, a passerby contacted law enforcement shortly before 6:15 a.m. after spotting what appeared to be a body floating about 50 feet offshore near Memorial Union.

UWPD officers responded and recovered the individual from the water. The person, identified only as a middle-aged man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
While the investigation remains ongoing, officials say there are no signs of foul play at this time.

The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the individual’s identity and further details following an autopsy and after next of kin have been notified.
