MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – Judge Susan M. Crawford will officially take her seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court on Friday, August 1. Her investiture ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Capitol rotunda.
Crawford won a statewide election in April 2025, defeating former Attorney General Brad Schimel. Her victory helped preserve the court’s 4–3 liberal majority and came after the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history.
Crawford grew up in Chippewa Falls and lives in Madison with her husband and two adult children. She has worked as an Assistant Attorney General, served in state agencies, advised former Governor Jim Doyle, and was a Dane County judge for six years.

She’s known for defending workers’ rights, reproductive health care, and fair elections, and she ran her campaign on keeping courts independent and accessible.
“As a little girl growing up in Chippewa Falls, I never imagined I’d be taking on the richest man in the world for justice in Wisconsin — and we won,” she said after her win.
Her swearing-in will mark the start of a 10-year term on the state’s highest court.
