Surveillance footage revealed that a suspect sprayed an accelerant on the outside of the home, setting it on fire. The suspect reportedly fled right after lighting the fire.
Deputies made contact with the victims, who extinguished the flames. Officials identified the suspect as a 32-year-old man who lived in a nearby home. They deployed a secure perimeter and attempted to contact him, but he refused to cooperate.
The man reportedly barricaded himself in the basement, refusing to surrender to authorities, as the sheriff’s office SWAT team, crisis negotiators, drone team and K9 crews were sent out to mitigate danger. Residents were asked to shelter in place as another home was evacuated.
Over about seven hours, SWAT tactical officials inside and around the home gave the suspect numerous orders to surrender, and offsite negotiators attempted contact for a peaceful surrender. Less-lethal gas and irritants were deployed for a voluntary surrender.
Officers subsequently opened a communication port in the side of the home by ramming into it with an armored car, as the man reportedly surrendered around 1:07 p.m.
