ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) — For the second-straight season, the Green Bay Blizzard are headed back to the Indoor Football League’s Eastern Conference championship.
“This is what we work for, all year, playoff time,” Blizzard wide receiver TJ Davis on what it means to be in the IFL Eastern Conference championship. “You can’t ask for anything better in Green Bay.”
Green Bay took care of the Tulsa Oilers 58-26 in the first round of the IFL playoffs behind an impressive performance from quarterback Max Meylor, who threw for 200 yards and four touchdowns, and from the Blizzard defense, who forced five turnovers (four interceptions, a season high).
“At the end of the day, defense wins championships,” Davis added. “Defense got stops, kept the offense out on the field, it was great complementary football.”
Last season, the Blizzard fell just short of an Eastern Conference championship, losing to the Massachusetts Pirates at home. But, now, it’s redemption time vs. the Quad City Steamwheelers on the road, with a trip to the IFL championship on the line in Tucson, Arizona.
Head Coach Corey Roberson’s squad faced off against the Steamwheelers three times during the regular season, winning two of the three games.
“We’re prepared,” Blizzard quarterback Max Meylor on facing the Steamwheelers for now the fourth time this season. “We know them, and they know us; these next few days are about getting treatment and getting right before we’re back at it.”
The Blizzard have not won an Eastern Conference championship since 2006, back when Green Bay was an ‘AF2’ team — one of the original Arena Football League’s developmental league teams.
“It would mean a lot to us as an organization, it’s been a while,” Roberson said.
Kick-off between Green Bay and the Quad Cities is scheduled for Saturday, August 9, at 7 PM in Moline, Illinois.
