GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) — Last season was filled with ups and downs for 2022 draft pick Romeo Doubs. The wide receiver dropped seven passes, was suspended by Green Bay for a game, and suffered two concussions in as many months. On the contrary, he shined in wins against the Cardinals and Seahawks, catching a pair of touchdowns in each game.
Now with year four on the horizon, the focus is on becoming a more polished wideout.
Packers’ Christian Watson progressing ahead of schedule in ACL recovery
“(The focus is) playing even faster and understanding the system,” said Doubs. “Understanding the nuances of different personnel or just finding an edge on the football field.”
Growth that’s necessary for a Packers team dealing with ailments all over their wide receiving rooms. Christian Watson is working his way back from an ACL injury, while Jayden Reed missed Thursday’s practice with a foot injury, and Dontayvion Wicks has been dealing with a calf problem for the last week.
In their absence, the onus has been placed on Doubs to take the reins of the room.
“Being on the flip side of this now with Savion (Williams) and Matthew (Golden) coming in as rookies, at some point that’s who I was, and just having some experience in this system to be able to guide them and coach them up to the best of my abilities so they can play fast,” said the fourth-year wideout. “I’m just grateful for it.”
A trait many wouldn’t expect to be at the forefront of Doubs’ game, due to his soft-spoken nature, but it’s one he’s developed as time has gone on and the Packers continue to get younger. The former Nevada wide receiver even laughed off the idea of being called a veteran in the room.
But even while Doubs grows as a leader, his game has also taken a step in the right direction.
“I think (he’s done a nice job) in terms of patience as a route runner,” said Packers head coach Matt LaFleur. “When that ball is in the air, he’s going to attack that football.”
“We put a lot of work in (together in the offseason) in California,” said Packers quarterback Jordan Love. “I just love where he’s at mentally… even when we’re not on the same page sometimes, and a play might be incomplete, we’re talking after and figuring out how we might do things differently, so I love where he’s at right now.”
There might not be a concrete No. 1 wide receiver for the Pack entering this season, just as was the case last year, but so far through a dozen training camp practices, Doubs has separated himself as a difference maker in that room.

To him, the focus is on improving each day.
“As cringey as it might sound, it comes down to the details,” said Doubs. “It comes down to the process and the progress and that’s with anything.”
