MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is throwing a 1940s-themed party to bid farewell to a local WWII icon before it heads to dry dock for maintenance.
According to a press release from the museum, on August 31, “Swingin’ in Dry Dock” will feature big band favorites by the Manitowoc Marine Band, swing dance lessons, and classic Americana fare from Hot Daugs. Guests are encouraged, but not required, to dress in 1940s or Allied military attire.

The evening will also offer a rare “Rigged for Red” tour aboard the USS Cobia, with the submarine lit in red and WWII reenactors stationed throughout its compartments sharing stories from history.
Tickets are $30 per person, while submarine veterans can attend for free with ID. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. and tickets are available bit.ly/SwinginDryDock.
The USS Cobia, built in 1943, has been a proud centerpiece of the museum and a lasting reminder of Manitowoc’s role in WWII submarine production. She will head to dry dock in September thanks to years of community support.
