MADISON, Wis. (WFRV) – After torrential downpours caused widespread flooding in Wisconsin, especially in and around Milwaukee, officials are advising those who seek contractors to practice caution when hiring.
The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) said in a release that many will likely seek repair contractors, but that vulnerability often breeds scammers.

“Vulnerable consumers are often targeted by scammers,” DATCP Secretary Randy Romanski said via a release. “Property owners should stay alert about the possibility that quick and easy fixes may be too good to be true.”
The release added that homeowners should be cautious of door-to-door solicitors, as they may not be a reliable resource. DATCP says it often gets reports of transient crews showing up to help; however, many turn out to be scammers who pressure vulnerable consumers into paying.
Transient crews aren’t from the state, and if something goes wrong, it could be almost impossible to recoup money spent. A repair crew knocking on a door to offer help may seem enticing, but it’s often a scam.
DATCP says it’s best to hire established local contractors instead of risking it on an unknown crew, and that it’s crucial to contact officials to confirm valid permits and ask for recommendations from trusted individuals.
