VIOLA, Wis. (WFRV) – A woman reportedly from Green Bay was arrested in western Wisconsin as a result of a check forgery investigation.
According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, on September 2, around 12:30 p.m., 32-year-old Megan Strait was arrested at the sheriff’s office. Strait had reportedly come to the office to get an impounded vehicle from an unrelated incident.
Authorities said Strait is from Green Bay and formerly of rural Viola.
The arrest was the result of an investigation ongoing since June when authorities were first notified of multiple check forgeries in a nearby jurisdiction.
It was learned that ‘numerous’ checks were issued on an account in the name of a 78-year-old man who died in April 2023, the release said. It was also mentioned the checks were issued after the man died.
A residence in rural Viola was searched on July 15, and authorities collected evidence linking Strait to the victim’s residence. A 26-year-old man was taken into custody on a unrelated matter, but Strait was not immediately found.
After Strait was arrested on September 2, she was booked on multiple charges. She appeared in court on September 3 for a bail hearing and was reportedly released on a $2,500 signature bond.
Strait is scheduled to be back in court on September 23 to appear on this case as well as two other open cases, the release said.
