OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – The Oshkosh Police Department says that four juveniles are being referred for criminal charges after they were reported for allegedly displaying a handgun near Oshkosh West High School on Friday morning.
According to a release, officers were sent to a report of somebody holding what had appeared to be a handgun at the skate park across the street from the school shortly before noon on Friday.
UPDATE: Young child among injured after Sheboygan disturbance involving gun
The school was placed on a temporary lockdown as officers arrived to investigate the incident. Officials deemed that it was not a real firearm, recovering a BB gun/facsimile firearm, with four juveniles identified as the individuals displaying it.
The four are being referred to criminal charges for the incident. The release also added a safety notice from the Oshkosh Police Department, urging parents to know the risks that come with children having these kinds of weapons.
“Facsimile or replica handguns can be easily mistaken for real firearms by law enforcement and the general public due to their realistic appearance,” the release said. “This can quickly escalate situations and lead to potentially tragic outcomes during disturbances.”
