STURGEON BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – A Door County couple kicked off a campaign to ensure quality childcare access for families in the area via a $1 million donation.
Gary and Marti Spittell Ziegelbauer are longtime residents of Door County and philanthropists. Together, the couple has committed the lead pledge to Doorway to Learning, which is kicking off its Opening the Door to a Brighter Future Campaign.

Doorway to Learning is both an early care and education facility that cares for about 150 kids in the school year and over 200 in summer. The campaign is about $4 million, and the Ziegelbauers are hoping that their donation inspires others to follow along.
As a result of their donation, the Gordon Road campus will be renamed to the Gary and Marti Ziegelbauer Campus Doorway to Learning. The couple said in a release that they firmly believe communities need the following three critical pieces for success: jobs, housing and childcare.
“One of the critical components of any community is strengthening families through childcare so they can still work and their children are taken care of,” Marti said.
The couple added that it was an honor to be able, stating that the positive effects of quality childcare can last for generations.
“We are honored to be able to leave a legacy for the children and families of Door County,” Gary and Marti said via the release. “We are lucky to be able to help support and sustain quality child care, it makes the community stronger. Its positive effects will last for generations.”
