MANITOWOC, Wis. (WFRV) – A criminal complaint provides new details in the Sept. 23 shooting death of a 25-year-old man at a Dewey Street apartment in Manitowoc.
According to the complaint, detectives said the victim was found near South 17th Street with multiple gunshot wounds. An autopsy determined he had been shot three times, with one round striking his liver and aorta, which was considered fatal.

Investigators interviewed a witness who said the victim had gone to the apartment of Kirk Dunn, 20, where Dunn was living with his girlfriend. The witness said he saw the victim approach the apartment door before hearing gunfire.
During his interview with police, Dunn admitted firing both a handgun and later an AR-15 style rifle from inside the apartment. He told investigators he believed the victim had pointed a firearm with a laser at him and said he fired back in self-defense.
The complaint also included conflicting statements from Dunn’s girlfriend, who told investigators she saw the victim with a firearm but also described Dunn as armed and suicidal earlier in the night.

Shell casings were found both near the apartment entrance and near where the victim had been, and investigators said rounds fired from Dunn’s weapon entered a nearby building, narrowly missing another resident.
Dunn is charged with first-degree intentional homicide and first-degree recklessly endangering safety, both with use of a dangerous weapon. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison. His bond is set at $500,000, and he is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Oct. 9.
