OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Police in Oshkosh are offering prevention tips to the community after receiving 36 vehicle theft reports since March.
According to a release from the Oshkosh Police Department, police received 36 reports of theft from vehicles, with five of those incidents resulting in firearms being taken.

Officers say it is important that residents remember to remove all valuable items, especially firearms, from their vehicles and to make sure that both their vehicles and their homes are securely locked.
In light of the 36 vehicle theft reports, police have provided the following tips with the hopes of enhancing the safety of local community members and their personal belongings:
- Remove all valuables from your vehicle. If unable to remove the items, make sure they are hidden and out of sight.
- If and when possible, park in well-lit areas and areas under video surveillance.
- Always close the vehicle’s windows and lock the doors- even when it is parked in a private garage.
- Secure all doors to the home including garage doors and side doors.
- Close and lock all windows on the first floor of the home.
- Leave outside lights on for extra visibility during the night.
Officers state that by being proactive in preventing crime, the risk of potential theft is reduced. Making sure that firearms are removed from vehicles and secured inside the home also helps increase safety within the community.
