Security planning for the 2026 White House Correspondents’ Dinner is facing new scrutiny after an armed suspect was stopped near the event area at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.
Officials said the president, vice president, Cabinet members, journalists, and other guests were inside the hotel when the incident unfolded. The Secret Service secured the ballroom and nearby protected areas, but the broader hotel was not under the highest federal security designation used for some major national events.
A law enforcement officer was struck in a bullet-resistant vest and was expected to recover. The suspect was taken into custody, and investigators continued reviewing how he got close to the event space.
The dinner brought together a large group of senior government figures, media members, and invited guests, making the security setup a central focus after the incident.
