OSHKOSH, Wis. (WFRV) – Two cats and eight kittens were abandoned in a crate, and a dog was left tied to a bench in front of the Oshkosh Humane Society earlier this week, prompting officials to provide necessary reminders.
A Facebook post from the Oshkosh Area Humane Society states that when an employee came into work early in the morning this past week, they arrived to find a crate with two cats and eight kittens, as well as a dog tied to a bench in front of the shelter.
“We hope people can understand how this affects the animals and our shelter,” the Humane Society’s post began.

Officials stated that the animals were abandoned around 9 p.m. the day before the employee found them. The cats and dog were left with a note, which was unfortunately chewed up by the dog. Leaving employees with no information to go on, on top of an already busy day ahead.

“These unexpected arrivals significantly tax shelter resources,” officials said in the post. “We had already scheduled 12 cats to come in that day, which means we took in 22 cats in one day. Also, nearly every dog kennel is already full.”
The animals were left outside in the dark for ten hours. Luckily, they made it through the night unharmed by either predators, the dog escaping, or becoming tangled in the attached leash.

This post is not intended to shame the people who obviously very much needed our help. We are just asking that people in need call us first so that we can be prepared, and can help the animals in the best way possible. If they would have called and made an appointment, we would have scheduled the necessary staff to best help these animals immediately. We would have gotten the health and behavior history on the dog, which would help us tremendously with caring for and placing him into a new home. We know times are tough; we can work with your individual situation to the best of our resources.
