Austin Straubel Airport prepares for surge of visitors during NFL Draft

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WFRV) – Austin Straubel International Airport is set to see thousands of passengers come through the week of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Local 5’s Blake Borths caught up with Austin Straubel International Airport Director Marty Piette, who said for many fans, the airport will be the first of many stops along the way during the week of the NFL Draft, and he wants to make a great first impression.

“We want to be the first thing they see and the last thing they see,” said Piette. “We want to put forward a great first impression, but also a first-class experience. We may be a small regional airport, but we still offer the same amenities as the larger airports in the country.”

GRB is expecting over 40,000 passengers during draft week, more than double what Green Bay would see during a Packers home game.

“We’ve shipped the Packers out to São Paulo, Brazil, off to the United Kingdom, so we’re really no strangers to large events, so we are really excited,” added Piette. “It’s something different than what we have done before.”

With high-volume travel days beginning on Wednesday, passengers might want to take the extra time to be prepared for longer lines.

“When you are standing in line, I kind of think to myself, am I prepared?” said Jessica Mayle, Regional Spokesperson for the TSA. “All those tiny items that I think people were used to putting in the bowls — loose coins, keys, your AirPods — those are the things that will most likely get left behind. Passengers are kinda in a rush. So pack all of those little things into your carry-on.”

With the spotlight shining on Green Bay, airport officials say they’re ready to help kick off an unforgettable draft week experience.
