‘Avoid all burning’: Wisconsin DNR warns of extreme fire danger in 19 counties on Mother’s Day

(WFRV) – A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the Wisconsin DNR and National Weather Service in 19 Wisconsin counties for Mother’s Day due to extreme fire danger.

A release from the Wisconsin DNR states that the Red Flag Warning will be in effect for Sunday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Due to a variety of weather factors creating extremely dangerous wildland fire condition, officials issued the Red Flag Warning, including hot temperatures, very low humidity, gusty winds, and lack of recent precipitation.

The Warning has been issued for the following Wisconsin counties (northeast in bold):

  • Ashland
  • Barron
  • Bayfield
  • Burnett
  • Douglas
  • Florence
  • Forest
  • Iron
  • Langlade
  • Lincoln
  • Marinette
  • Oneida
  • Polk
  • Price
  • Rusk
  • Sawyer
  • St. Croix
  • Vilas
  • Washburn

The DNR is asking the public to be especially careful with any activities that could potentially lead to a wildland fire and check any fires from recent days to make sure they have been properly extinguished. Campfires, ashes from fireplaces, outdoor grills, smoking, chainsaws, off-road vehicles or other small engines with hot exhaust systems have the potential to throw a spark, ignite a fire and spread quickly. Please use extreme caution until the fire weather and the fuel conditions improve.
