WEST BEND, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Beef Council has announced the winner of its second annual Wisconsin’s Best Burger Contest: the Brazen Beer Cheese Burger from Brazen Head Pub in West Bend.
Revealed Thursday, the winning burger features a half-pound of Angus beef topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, onion rings, and Harp beer cheese, all served on a pretzel roll.

Brazen Head Pub also offers a Build Your Own Burger option, where customers can customize everything from the bun and sauce to the vegetables and cheese.
“Wow! It was an honor just being nominated for a second year by our customers—winning is a bit of a surprise with the stiff competition,” said owner John Fellenz. “Our staff—Melanie, James (Metal), Tyler P., Andrew, Dan, John, Kevin, Mason, Ryan, Max, and Karina—cook with their hearts. Our general manager Megan, kitchen manager Tyler L., and I are so excited to share this win with them. Thank you to everyone!”
The Wisconsin Beef Council created the contest to promote 100% beef burgers served at Wisconsin restaurants. A panel of three secret judges visited the eight finalists and scored burgers based on taste, appearance, presentation, cooking temperature, and overall enjoyment. Judges could also award bonus points for atmosphere and dining experience.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelming response for this contest,” said Tammy Vaassen, executive director of the Wisconsin Beef Council. “The Best Burger contest has been a great way to encourage Wisconsinites to visit local restaurants and enjoy delicious, 100% beef burgers. The judges’ feedback was incredibly positive for all competitors, which reflects the strong support each restaurant received during nominations.”
Judges praised the winning burger for being cooked perfectly, juicy, and complemented by tasty onion rings.
The contest began with a 30-day nomination period open to the public. The eight restaurants with the most nominations advanced to the judging round held in April.

Eligible burgers had to include a formed ground beef patty or patties served on a bun or bread item, such as biscuits, focaccia, or tortillas, and could feature any combination of condiments, sauces, cheeses, and toppings.
“Restaurants can watch for details about next year’s contest coming out in February 2026 on our website,” said Vaassen. “The contest has shown us that whether you’re from a rural area or a larger city, beef brings our communities together for delicious meals.”
