Emplify Health celebrates life-saving efforts of donors during ‘National Donate Life Month’

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Emplify Health officials gathered on Wednesday afternoon at the Bellin Hospital in Green Bay to highlight donors.

Through donating organs, eyes or tissue, immeasurable lives can be changed forever and saved, and Emplify Health by Bellin is celebrating those people who make the ultimate selfless decision.

The Donate Life Celebration was to honor National Donate Life Month, which takes place during April. Attendees and multiple Emplify Health by Bellin representatives placed paper birds on a tree, each paying homage to somebody who has saved lives through donation.

Intensive Care Unit Nurses Ashley Tomaso and Jordan Cooper talked with Local 5 at the event, emphasizing what the birds meant.

“The theme of this year’s National Donate Life Month is Let It Sing,” Cooper said. “A lot of people see birds as remembering lost loved ones. It’s to honor that birds signify spring and new life coming around while remembering those who have passed.”

Tomaso said it’s not just about caring for patients, but also for their families, especially when talking about these difficult decisions.

“The biggest thing is making sure that it’s something you want and that your family knows about it,” Tomaso said. “One of the things that’s hard for us as nurses is that when we get patients in these hard situations, we’re caring for them, but also their families.”

The end of the celebration was marked with a flag-raising and a moment of silence.
