Fire in Fond du Lac caused by resident attempting to use gasoline to light bonfire, one hospitalized

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WFRV) – Fond du Lac fire crews are urging residents to never use gasoline or other flammable liquids for recreational fires after a man was hospitalized on Saturday evening.

The Fond du Lac Fire Rescue was sent to a North Park Avenue home around 5:52 p.m. for a reported fire after an explosion. Police arrived as well, reporting that it had been contained to a portable fire pit in the driveway.

One of the residents had burns and was checked by responding medical officials. The fire department arrived, and the fire pit was extinguished.

Another one of the residents in the home had multiple burns and was taken to a hospital for further treatment to his hands, arms and face.

Officials deemed that a person tried to light a fire pit with gasoline onto cardboard in the fire pit, leading to the cardboard being ignited. The gas followed back into the can, blowing up and lighting his clothes on fire.

Officials issued a reminder, urging people to never use gasoline or any other flammable liquids to light recreational fires. The Fond du Lac Fire Rescue provided a link to the city’s safety website regarding ordinances on recreational fires.
