(WFRV) – A 39-year-old citizen of Mexico found in Wisconsin was sentenced to prison for illegally reentering the United States after having previously been removed.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Wisconsin, Rafael Cruz-Hernandez was sentenced to eight months in prison for the offense.

On December 23, 2023, Cruz-Hernandez was arrested for a domestic abuse offense, his second arrest for such an offense. He was originally removed from the United States in 2010 following a conviction for third-degree sexual assault.
In choosing an eight-month sentence, Judge William Conley considered Cruz-Hernandez’s criminal history, his recent domestic arrests and injunction, as well as his consistent employment and the outpouring of support from his family and friends.
Judge Conley noted that he lacks the authority to release Cruz-Hernandez into the community and that he poses a risk of unlawfully returning to the United States. He advised Cruz-Hernandez that if he were to return again, he could face higher penalties.
