CUDAHY, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in southeastern Wisconsin have released more information regarding the 12-year-old student who was taken into custody on Wednesday for allegedly bringing a handgun to school.
According to the Cudahy Police Department, the student was turned over to the Vel R. Phillips Juvenile Justice Center and criminal charges are being referred.

The investigation began when another student alerted a teacher that the 12-year-old may have had a handgun in his backpack. The teacher immediately informed the principal, who was near the unattended backpack at the time.
The student suspected of having the firearm was in another part of the school. The principal opened the backpack, allegedly discovered a firearm inside, secured the bag, and contacted police.
The investigation remains ongoing.

“I would like to personally commend the student for speaking up and speaking out,” the Cudahy Police Department stated. “I also commend the teacher and principal’s quick and appropriate action to ensure the safety of all students and staff.”
