Neenah Veterans memorial construction underway

NEENAH, Wis. (WFRV) – Construction on a new Veterans memorial in Neenah has officially begun.

“It’ll mean so much to all the Veterans, not just to me, something we set out to do and we finally did it,” said local Vietnam War Veteran Bob Borszich.

Borszich and other Veterans approached City of Neenah officials about revamping the existing Veterans memorial in Shattuck Park. It included a memorial plaque and three flags: the American flag, Wisconsin flag, and a POW/MIA flag. There were parts of the memorial that the Veterans said looked rundown, and they said it was time for a revamp.

With help from the city of Neenah, the veteran group raised $175,000 for the project. Construction began on Thursday.

“It’ll be great not having a fence here, but honestly, currently we have three flags and we’re going to triple that,” said Neenah parks and recreation director Michael Kading. “Nine flags, six service branches, and three flags that you see flying here today.”

“Hopefully, they’ll remember the people who sacrificed so that they now have the privileges to walk up here, go to the library and do things like that,” Borszich said when asked about what impact he hopes the new memorial will have on anybody who sees it.

Construction will finish up at the end of spring, and officials will hold a re-dedication ceremony at the memorial on June 15.
