WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. (WFRV) – One of two boaters was found dead on Friday after they went missing on Thursday afternoon when a boat capsized in the Wisconsin River as the search for the other continues.

The Wisconsin Dells Police Department said that a Department of Natural Resources aircraft onsite and overhead assisting found a ‘submerged item of interest.’ A search boat responded and found the missing person submerged and dead.

The search for the other missing boater is ongoing, but due to river flow and currents, it’s a challenging rescue mission. Three people were on the boat when it capsized, with one able to escape to shore and get treatment.

Officials say a rise in the river is anticipated in the coming days, and they’re in contact with Alliant Energy regarding water flow from dams. Divers attempted to check the areas but the current was unsafe.

The following agencies have assisted in the search, along with the volunteer search and rescue organization Bruce’s Legacy:

  • Columbia County Dive Team
  • Columbia County Emergency Management
