NEW BERLIN, Wis. (WFRV) – One person was taken to a local hospital, and another was treated at the scene of a fire at an apartment complex in southeastern Wisconsin Thursday afternoon.
A release from the New Berlin Fire Department states that crews were called to a reported fire at a 109-unit apartment complex in the 13000 block of West Park Central Boulevard around 4:10 p.m. on April 10.

Firefighters were told when they arrived that an apartment on the second floor of one of the buildings had a fire inside of the unit that was believed to have already been put out by the resident with a fire extinguisher.
Residents also reported that the resident of the unit was still inside. Firefighters quickly got into the apartment, conducted a search, and immediately found and removed the resident from the building.
The resident was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment as crews worked to verify that the fire was completely out while ventilating the building of smoke.
Authorities say that an additional person suffered a minor injury from the incident and was treated at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

It was noted in the release that the apartment complex had working smoke detectors that alerted residents to the fire.
The New Berlin FD reminds residents to never leave cooking unattended, stay in the kitchen while using the stove, and to keep flammable items away from burners. Taking these precautions may prevent fires and protect lives and property.
