REEDSBURG, Wis. (WFRV) – A decades-long cold case in Wisconsin has officially been closed after authorities confirmed the woman at the center of it is alive and well.
The Sauk County Sheriff’s Office has been investigating the disappearance of Audrey Backeberg, who went missing in July 1962 at the age of 20 while living in Reedsburg.

Over the years, investigators pursued numerous leads in an effort to determine Backeberg’s whereabouts. Despite their efforts, the case eventually went cold.
Earlier in 2025, the case was reassigned to a detective as part of a broader review of cold cases. Through a comprehensive investigation — including a full review of the original files, re-interviewing witnesses and uncovering new information — authorities were able to confirm that Backeberg is alive and currently living outside Wisconsin.
Investigators determined that Backeberg’s disappearance was voluntary and that no foul play or criminal activity was involved.

“This resolution underscores the dedication of our team to provide closure for families and the community, even after many years,” the department said.
